The competition hosted between March 5 and 9 by the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi (northeastern Romania) gathered 99 students from Bulgaria, Greece, Iran, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine, grouped in 25 teams.

'I am glad that the Romanian mathematics school once again confirmed the value it has demonstrated in time in many international competitions, either for junior and senior pupils or for university students. The fact that there is continuity in the achievement of outstanding results demonstrates that we have a base and a performance-oriented philosophy,' the Minister Delegate for Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Development Mihnea Costoiu wrote on his Facebook page, referring to the Romanian students' performance. "I had a fine time in Romania, one of my best Globe Aware trips.(...) I want you to know what a wonderful week you provided me in Romania. It was even more special because we were trated more like a part of the family than visitors - staying at their B&B - like one of their family. Food was WONDERFUL! I am glad we were able to further the goals for the community center as it will supply some critical services when it is completed. A busy but satisfying week!" http://www.globeaware.org/about-us/testimonials/6034-romania-testimonials#.U4Io4VJZqHs

Romania: Maramures is a rural fairytale Sarah Shuckburgh travels through space and time to Maramures and an ancient Romanian way of life. "I am staying in a traditional Maramures house. Although my hosts married decades ago, the wife's trousseau is prominently displayed – layers of hand-woven blankets and embroidered linen hang from the ceiling on wooden poles. Next to a ceramic stove, a bed is heaped with more blankets and cushions. Above the dining table, sacred icons are draped with white scarves." "Religion is hugely important here. There are nearly 100 wooden churches in Maramures, eight of them Unesco World Heritage Sites. The village of Ieud, in the beautiful Iza valley, has a 14th-century church made of fir wood, with a traditional spindly, shingled spire. Inside, the wooden walls are decorated with 17th-century paintings, a mix of Byzantine and folk art with biblical quotations in Cyrillic script. At the altar, villagers are praying, crossing themselves repeatedly, touching icons and kissing the carpet beneath them." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/romania/10086702/Romania-Maramures-is-a-rural-fairytale.html#disqus_thread

Romanian Monasteries

We are just starting to plan a trip to Romania in June. We plan to spend a couple days in Bucovina to see the Painted Monasteries. I have found information about the monasteries and their locations, but I can't find anything online that gives the opening days or hours. Can someone point me to a link? Or does anyone who has traveled recently have this information? Are they open all days of the week including Sundays?

Most of them are open all the time, as they are in fact functioning monasteries (with monks or nuns, daily religious services, pilgrims etc.) On Sundays and on major religious holidays they can get very crowded.

Hotels in Review

The staff at this hotel are extremely professional and provide excellent service. They always say hello and nothing is too much trouble. The free wifi and the free late checkout are added bonuses that many hotels charge for now. The rooms are clean and comfortable with extras in a standard room that you do not always expect (slippers, dressing gown). The hotel is in a good location within walking distance of the old town, shops and a lovely park. The only thing I didn't like which is nothing to do with the hotel, is that the indoor pool and gym are run by a separate company and open to the public. This meant it was far too busy most of the time to the point that I could not even get through the crowds to the changing rooms! Overall though I would recommend staying at this hotel.

This was my second stay at this hotel and it is marvelous. The accommodations are first class, the staff is impeccable, and on this trip it was warm and sunny and was able to enjoy the pool as well. The staff will make sure that you get what you want. They believe in the saying the customer is always right. I highly recommend it.
TRAVELLER - US
We stayed at the Hilton Sibiu for 5 nights during the International Theatre Festival (if you haven't been go, it's a fantastic fesitval). The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was large and very comfortable, we also had breakfast included which had plenty of choice for all tastes. It is a little out of the way of Sibiu, about 10 minutes in a taxi, but a minor inconvenience really. Overall I'd highly recommend a stay at this hotel. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay such a comfortable one. Source: http://www.hotels.com/ho265381/radisson-blu-bucharest-bucharest-romania/#reviews
